Our Journey to Canada

Canada comprised of many different cultures, nations and religions.

Engage in a conversation with your family about the journey and reason why your family choose to come to Canada and why they decided to leave their homeland to emigrate to another country.

Include information such as, year, family members, reasons for leaving, reason for selecting Canada as their new home.

Emigrant vs. Immigrant
When a person emigrate, he/she leaves one country or region to live in another either temporarily or permanently.  When he/she immigrates arrives in that other country.  In other words, he/she emigrates from one country to immigrate to another country.
While emigratus referred to "moving away," immigratus referred to "moving into."

  1. My dad's great grandparents came to Canada more than a century ago. They came from Ukraine, where it was hard to make a living. They liked the idea of Canada because there was an offer of free land for immigrants who were willing to move to places like Alberta and Manitoba. Ukrainians were not always welcomed at first by Canadians but over the generations they have become proud members of society.

  13. MY MOM'S PARENTS:
My grandfather is one of 14 children (11 boys and 3 girls). He left portugal as a teenager to escape serving time in the military (his other brothers did the same when their age came up). He moved to France where he lived for a few years working odd jobs as a carpenter apprentice. He then moved to Canada in his early twenties (1967) where he met up with his brothers who he has not seen in many years. He was not allowed to return to Portugal for many years because he did not serve military time.
My grandmother has 7 sisters. She is one of 4 sisters who were selected by their parents to work the farmland and later, when money was available, they had a choice to emigrate from Portugal. The other 3 sisters had their education funded and continued to live in Portugal. My grandmother left a small farming town in portugal to move to the U.S.A to live with her sister, in hopes of making a better life for herself. Unfortunately there were confusion with her documents and during a stop-over in Toronto, Ontario (1968), she was not allowed back on the airplane. Fortunately during this time, there were many Portuguese people immigrating into Canada, and a lawyer recommended by the Portuguese Embassy matched her up with a local family who took her in.

    MY DAD'S PARENTS:
My grandmother immigrated to Canada (1967) when she was 18 years old and was a nanny to a wealthy family and their children. She was lucky because she had sisters who already immigrated. Soon all her siblings (9) and her parents left Portugal to live in Canada.
My grandfather left Portugal looking for opportunities and a better life in Canada (1970). He always dreamed of being a entrepreneur and shortly after arriving, opened his own clothes cleaners store.
Both came from the same small town in St.Miguel island and meet up in Toronto.

    MY PARENTS:
My parents are first generation Canadians which makes me a second generation Canadian.

  14. My mother fist came to Canada in 1982 from Ecuador at age 17 after high school on a trip because it was a gift from her parents.
My mom then went back to Ecuador after three months to go to university and study medicine. She kept asking her parents if she could return to Canada to study English until finally in 1986 she returned to Canada and attended collage to study English on a student visa. After the expiry of the visa she decided she wanted to stay longer, so she formally requested a landed immigrant status.

  15. My grandparents came to Canada from Greece in 1974. They left Greece because there was no work and also to give my mom and my uncle a better education. My grandparents said that my mom would not have many chances because she was a girl living in a small village. Back then boys were seen as better there. They also came here because they were told that if you work hard in Canada you had the chance to buy a house. My grandparents had a choice between Canada and Australia and they chose Canada because my grandfather's brother lived in Toronto and he promised my grandfather that he would help him find work.

  23. In my family my parents and grandparents were born here in Canada. In fact my family has been in Canada for over 13 generations. Way back in the early 1600's my ancestors emigrated from England and the British Isles. They sailed on the Mayflower and went to the New World now known as the United States. During the American Revolution my ancestors decided they wanted to remain loyal to the British Empire. They therefore became what was called United Empire loyalists. They traveled north to what is now Nova Scotia in maritime reagin of Canada. Over the generations they migrated across to western Canada, finally settling in Ontario. The best thing to say about this migration is that today, I have relatives all across Canada.
