Read the following:
During a winter night in 1880, the Donnelly family was massacred by an angry mob and their farm was burned to the ground. These Irish Catholics had lived in southern Ontario for decades, eking out a living from the land. The head of the clan, James, had done prison time for killing another Irishman who had questioned the Donnellys’ right to the land they lived on. Thirteen men were tried on two separate occasions for the murder of the Donnellys; no one was ever convicted. Interest in the event remains high; several books and a play have been written and a museum has recently been established

Identify and record the immediate and underlying cause and the immediate long term consequence of the event.

Use the first row of the Activity sheet:  Cause and Consequence

  1. The underlying cause was that James the clan leader killed another Irishman who asked about the right to the land the Donnellys’ lived on. The immediate consequence is that him and his family had nowhere to live so they had to stay in the middle of nowhere. The long term consequence is that they do not have enough money to survive because they lost the farm which is there job.

  3. I think that the underlying cause was James and how he killed an irishman. He killed him because the Irishman asked about the land that James lived on. Immediately, he had to live somewhere else with his family. The long term consequence is that his job was a farmer and he didn't get to have that back.

  4. I think the underlying cause was that James was called into question about his land by an Irishman and then when James got the chance he murdered the Irishman. I think the immediate causes were that he and his family faced having to move elsewhere and had he didn't do that he would have some provided food so one part of his family's need was taken care of by itself. The long-term consequences were that he lost business and money making and he would have to try to find another way to make money.

  5. I think the underlying cause was that , James the head of the clan went to jail for murder of another man questioning their families athorotie over their land.I think the immediate cause was that their community was scraed of them ,and thats what caused the long-term conseqence of the whole family being murdered . The whole clan had to sufer because of James poor actions and disions.

  7. I think the underlying cause for the Donelly family was James fault because he killed the Irishman who asked him about his land. So the other people got angry at them and they came to there house in anger and they killed the Donellys.

  10. I think that the underlying cause is the dispute over the Donnelly's land. I think this because, if the man had never questioned James about his family's land, then the whole dispute could have been avoided. I think that the immediate cause was Jame's fight with the other Irishman. Because of the land dispute, James and the other Irishman were not on good terms. James murdered the Irishman. He went to jail. The long term affects of this was, that maybe it was because James murdered a fellow citizen, or really didn't own the land, maybe people just didn't like him, but they got revenge by coming together to burn down the Donnelly's barn and killing them all. The result is that the Donnelly's are dead, and that is a long term affect.

  11. I think the underling cause was the dispute of the land (argument). James killed another Irishman for having questioned his rights to the land which caused James to go to prison. The long term effect was that James's choices had caused thirteen men to murder his family.Even though they were tried on two different occasions no one was ever found guilty and its still an open case.

  12. I think the underlying cause was the misunderstanding of the farm that the Donnelly's owned. If James hadn't chose to murder that Irish man over a little misconception, the people wouldn't get revenge and burn down their farm in the first place. The long term affects is that due to James decisions, the Donnelly family is dead and their farm went to waste.

  13. I think the underlying cause was that James chose to murder another irish man. The event was that 13 men attempted to kill htem but the succeeded on the 2nd try. The long term consequence was that the family was killed and their farm land suddenly turned into a waste land.

  14. The underlyning cause was that james killed the irish man and the immidiate cause was to go to jail.I think that james killed him was because he questioned the donnely family; and the long term event was that the 13 men did not have intrest after a while.
